Operations Engineering Intern

Hickory/Lenoir, North Carolina Area, US - Information Services, Internet

Google isn't just a software company. The Hardware Operations team is responsible for monitoring the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure behind Google's powerful search technology. As an Operations Engineer, you'll install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware (like servers and its components). You'll also tackle the configuration of more complex components such as networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches and networking protocols. A typical day involves manual activities such as movement and installation of server racks and replacement of hardware components, and while it can sometimes be physically demanding, you are excited to work with infrastructure that is at the cutting-edge of computer technology.



Responsibilities


  • Contribute to repairs, upgrades, decoms, deployments, cabling, etc.

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair production servers and networking equipment.

  • Identify trends for machine failure, report bugs, and work with remote teams to resolve them.

  • Troubleshoot copper and fiber cabling.

  • Work in a physically demanding setting.





  • Minimum qualifications

  • Pursuing a BA/BS degree in an engineering discipline to be completed between December 2015 and December 2017 at a university in the United States or Canada.

  • Students must be eligible to work in the United States.





  • Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working in a technical component based system requiring an understanding of multiple parts and the impact on the whole.

  • Understanding of the fundamentals two of these three areas: computer hardware, networking systems, and the Linux operating system environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical skills and domains.

  • Comfortable performing repetitive technical and manual work.

  • Solid technical aptitude, including troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
