Network Design Engineer, Deployment

Google's network provides services to millions of Internet users around the world. The Network Deployment team is responsible for operating that network reliably and at scale. The team configures and installs network gear including running cables, hardware setup and decommissioning old gear as we're in a constant upgrade cycle. You have an appetite for accuracy and conduct site surveys and audits to verify that each network site has been built to the right specifications. A typical day can sometimes be physically demanding, but you're energetic and willing to participate in field deployments that are often off-site and off-hours. Beyond day-to-day responsibilities, you'll also develop creative approaches to keep operational costs low and improve the efficiency of our ever-growing infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Create the design and deployment packages (or global templates of those packages) that specify circuit mapping and equipment installation based on capacity delivery plans.
- Create, own and maintain NetDeploy standards and documentation.
- Develop the design process and customized tools (script, spreadsheet, query, etc.) to create design/deployment packages, or use those tools/standards to create the designs for individual projects.
- Monitor network service levels for internal customers, then design plans that meet forecasted demand and minimize total cost of ownership.
- Advise working teams during New Product Introduction preparation.
Minimum qualifications
- 4 years of relevant experience in network design or operations for service providers or large enterprise networks.
- Experience in network design, equipment and infrastructure.
- Experience using analytical tools and applying financial concepts to design decisions.
Preferred qualifications
- BA/BS degree in a technical discipline.
- Experience with field-based work in POPs, carrier hotels, Data Centers, and Central Office environments.
- Experience creating rack elevations and other planned/install/as-built documentation.
- Broad understanding of network theory, technologies, and the operation of optical transport and IP network systems.
- Able to script/program.
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills.
