As a Performance Engineer you'll be a part of the team responsible for developing the tests, tools, frameworks, and platforms necessary for ensuring Salesforce.com remains the world's most highly performing, scalable, and reliable enterprise cloud computing company in the industry. Your direct efforts will help us ensure we use the most innovative methodologies and architecture, cutting-edge automation, and advanced tools in the industry to maintain our leadership position.

  • Communicate status, risks to test complete dates, and offer mitigation strategies to ensure on-time delivery of all committed projects to cross functional teams

  • Participate in discussions and planning with development teams

  • Design and implement overhead, scalability, stability, and stress tests

  • Review automation implementations and encourage sound design principles

  • Review test plans, results analysis, and capacity planning guides for in–flight releases

  • Provide expertise for use in research projects, sizing, capacity planning, and hardware and network configuration

Required Skills:

  • 2+ years of performance testing, analysis, troubleshooting, and optimization on large scale LAMP systems

  • Experiences involving system performance measurement and analysis demonstrating a distinguished track record on technically demanding projects

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent work experience

  • Outstanding attention to detail and communication skills

  • Ability to identify and resolve system bottlenecks

  • Ability to identify potential limitations in hardware and software architectures

  • Ability to write clear and concise technical documents

  • Troubleshooting and reasoning skills

  • Understanding of throughput, latency, memory and CPU utilization

  • Strong understanding of CPU architectures (e.g., multicore utilization, hyperthreading, L1/L2 cache)

  • Strong understanding of memory management architecture (e.g., virtual memory, NUMA, TLB)

  • Strong understanding of file systems (e.g., XFS, ZFS, SAN, SSD)

  • Strong understanding of networking configuration and performance measurement

  • Working knowledge of operating system monitoring and tuning tools (e.g., OProfile, vmstat, iostat, nicstat, sar)

  • Working knowledge of application profiling tools, especially in the PHP ecosystem (xdebug, xhprof, kcachegrind)

  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, networking topology, use and configuration of routers/switches

  • Working knowledge of network packet sniffers (e.g., Wireshark, TcpDump, Network Monitor, tcpreplay, EtherPeek)

  • Strong skills in at least one high-level scripting language (e.g., Python, Ruby, Perl)

  • Strong knowledge of UNIX commands and scripting (e.g., bash)

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in automation of systems testing and system administration tasks

  • Experience with both static and dynamically typed object-oriented languages (e.g. PHP, Java, C++)

  • Familiar with PHP internals (memory management, common performance pitfalls)

  • Familiar with Java Technologies (e.g., JSP, Servlets, EJB, WebServices, SOA)
