Google

Manager, Outside Plant Infrastructure

San Francisco Bay Area, US - Information Services, Internet

Google is proud to boast a network that provides service to millions of Internet users around the world. The Network Engineering team is responsible for operating that network reliably and at scale. As a member of the team, you have a direct impact on design and feature enhancements to keep our systems running smoothly. You also ensure that network operations are safe and efficient by monitoring network performance, coordinating planned maintenance, adjusting hardware components and responding to network connectivity issues. Google's complex network generates a constant stream of challenges which require you to continually be innovative with an evolving set of technologies. Keeping the network reliable ensures that our users stay connected with our suite of applications, products and services.

You encourage safe and efficient network operations by leading project teams that maintain and improve network operations. You propose projects that increase network reliability and analyze network technologies that assess implications for Google.

As the Manager of Outside Plant Infrastructure, you will use your broad and deep background in real world physical layer infrastructure networking to lead Google's teams in managing the aggressively growing and evolving physical network assets. You will manage the transactional organization which monitors, repairs, and maintains with complete and continuous awareness of Google’s physical network infrastructure. You will measure and monitor current performance against Service Level Agreements (SLA) and continuously improve the processes and performance driving down our ‘mean time to resolve’ (MTTR) metric. You will work with internal customers to find areas of improvement and efficiency, and facilitate the documentation and lifecycle management of Google’s physical network infrastructure. You will manage a distributed transactional team, driving process improvements, and facilitate vendor improvement and management of the infrastructure all of Google relies on.

You have a passion for developing strong documentation and acceptance testing standards, and ensure these standards are adopted and practiced by network engineers, architects and field technicians around the globe. You have a strong bias toward action, while also recognizing the value of cost control and careful planning in a production environment. You are a strong, charismatic leader who takes pride in helping others succeed and are equally adept at leading teams and influencing groups not directly under your supervision. You will work closely with the network operations, project management, tools development and contracting/procurement teams to provide a seamless and reliable expansion of the Google network that benefits both internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, mentor and structure team and tools for rapid identification and resolution of physical layer network issues.

  • Track all faults of the physical network, develop and execute escalation processes with our numerous vendors to quickly resolve faults and restore service. Work closely with Network Architecture and Engineering. Plan physical layer SMEs to ensure physical layer designs as carried through vendors are compliant with Network Operations standards.

  • Develop the measurement systems for the organization and apply statistical process control to continuously improve the team's performance against speed and quality SLA. Specify via Scope of Work (SOWs) and standard architecture documents, then review and critically evaluate bids and options for physical network infrastructure and optical cabling, including both ISP and OSP. Consider in all cases the operational impacts, deployment, and implementation challenges associated with design implementation.

  • Own the standards and specifications for inside and outside plant optical networking infrastructure for Google campus and metro. Partner with teams to ensure all designs and implementations balance the current requirements and potential future generations of networking technology.

  • Lead kickoff and drive cross-functional meetings. Manage exceptions and communicate issues and risks to the rest of the organization. Identify cost and delivery metrics then drive initiatives to improve the efficiency, quality and to scale with the growth of Google. Interact with corporate legal, local authorities, jurisdictions, and permitting entities.

  • Minimum qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in a technical discipline or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10 years of experience in large scale optical networking infrastructure projects. Experience with OSP permitting, regulations, and governance processes.

  • 6 years of relevant management experience.

  • 4 years of hands-on experience with network infrastructure builds, with emphasis on optical transport, dark and leased fiber, cross connects, etc.

  • Preferred qualifications

  • MS/PhD degree in an engineering discipline.

  • Participation and/or authorship in IEEE, TIA, ISO organizations or similar industry organizations. Also RCDD, DCDC or other similar professional certification.

  • Management experience running in a distributed capacity and/or working with geographically diverse teams.

  • Proven track record of leadership in high-growth, rapidly-evolving environments, with demonstrated experience leading a high volume transactional operations team.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the proven ability to present proposals to executives for quantifiable, data-driven solutions.
