Our computational challenges are so big and unique we can't just buy our hardware, we've got to make it ourselves. Our Platforms Team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google's services. As a Mechanical Engineer you design and evaluate our data center systems, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning. From the chip to chiller, you are responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that will scale with Google's continued growth.
With your technical expertise, you lead and manage projects, develop product and process improvements, provide consultation to others and help facilitate training and development.
Responsibilities
- Research new designs, materials, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities. Carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into mass production.
- Define data center system-level architectures, specifying performance requirements, and creating accurate conceptual design and programming requirements documentation.
- Produce analyses that ensure designs satisfy the requirements, including predicted cooling, structural, and operational concerns.
- Work closely with Platforms hardware designers to optimize the interfaces between the IT equipment and the facility. Define/create the interface infrastructure between the facility and the IT equipment with a view for optimizing utilization and minimizing the total cost of ownership.
- Travel to data center sites for engineering evaluations, mechanical systems audits, startup testing, and full commissioning, as required.
Minimum qualifications
- BA/BS degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
- 6 years of experience in mechanical engineering with 5 years of experience in mission critical facilities.
Preferred qualifications
- MS in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience in mechanical system reliability and risk-assessment studies.
- Experience in multiple or all of the areas of chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, controls, generators, and life safety systems.
- Go-to resource for mechanical in the area of data center engineering.
- Input into upcoming system architectures.
- Ability to perform complex business case analyses.
