Role: Network Engineer



As a Network Engineer at Salesforce.com, you will be part of a dynamic, global team delivering and supporting technology infrastructure to meet the substantial growth needs of the business. In this role, you will collaborate with other Systems, Network, Database and Storage Engineers in delivering innovative solutions in an agile, dynamic environment.



This role will be part of a strategic team responsible for building and deploying data centres, as well as capacity adds/refreshes, in a 24x7x365 environment. Key to this position will be a focus on process automation in a secure, high-performance, highly available (99.999%), and fully resilient infrastructure across multiple data centres.



Successful candidates will be recognized as technical experts in the Network Engineering discipline and will have the ability to articulate and demonstrate both deep and broad knowledge across multiple areas of information technology in support of a SaaS/PaaS infrastructure. The Network Engineer will be a member of a Global Operations Engineering team responsible for the delivery of products which are key to the success of the salesforce.com production environment. Successful delivery of key infrastructure projects ensure the efficient and stable operation of our highly scalable and available on-demand CRM, SaaS and PaaS platform. The Network Engineer will be the cornerstone of our continued efforts in the direction of high availability, automation and performance, as we expand our team in a follow-the-sun engineering team.



Responsibilities:



• Must take ownership and accountability for actions, and be known for meticulous attention to detail.

• Must have the ability to provide effort estimation and complete work based on a schedule of activities in coordination with Operations Manager and Project Manager.

• Must execute Salesforce.com production Change Management, Problem Management and Incident Response procedures

• Must work directly with and within the TechOps teams in designing, building and deploying highly available, robust, resilient, secure and supportable 24x7x365 solutions (DC Builds/Splits/Capacity Adds/Refreshes).

• The ideal candidate will have prior experience with process automation of any kind, custom automation and provisioning processes implemented via scripting languages, templates, Python as an example.

• Must be able to develop requirements for the tool sets required to streamline and automate system installation and configuration procedures.

• May be required to define requirement for, and/or write/test custom tools to handle system automation tasks (installation, configuration, monitoring, etc).

• Back-up and restore management: use back-up and recovery best practices to ensure systems are protected from data loss in compliance with established business continuity and DR practices.

• Define, develop and deploy system monitoring requirements/thresholds as well as corrective actions.

• Adhere to system hardening guidelines and security best practices in support of ISO 27001/PCI/SOx.

• Document all operational processes and procedures to optimize support and management of deployed systems.

• Assist internal Salesforce.com Technology teams in performing Production Operations tasks including systems monitoring, performing diagnostics, problem isolation and solution deployment by providing expert-level operational support (training and on-call support).

• Contribute towards new and on-going Technology projects in areas of Scalability, Performance and High Availability.

• Engage effectively in technology discussions with Architects.

• Develop strong partnerships with Architecture, Project Management, Data Centre and Provisioning groups.



Experience/Skills Required:



• BS/BA Degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.

• 5-7 years’ experience as a Network Engineer managing and administering network infrastructure (advanced knowledge of routers, switches, load balancers, SSL acceleration technology, layers 1-4, etc).

• This Network Engineer position will be responsible for the implementation, management, and support of all network equipment and data communications.

• 5+ years’ experience with dynamic network protocols for routing and access, including but not limited to: BGP, IS-IS, OSPF, RADIUS, TACACS, STP, etc.

• Expert-level knowledge of TCP/IP an absolute requirement.

• Experience with multi-site routing, peering, and disaster recovery network architectures.

• 2 years of experience in Linux or Solaris-based environment for high-volume, high-availability transactional systems with 24x7x365 uptime requirements (eCommerce or Internet experience desirable).

• Extensive experience resolving moderate to complex network issues, network capacity issues, and other distributed network issues.

• Proven strong innovative and analytical skill with extensive implementation skills.

• Must have the ability to fill the role of the Network engineer on projects providing guidance to other system administrators and engineers on the team.

• Must have the ability to take the lead on installation, configuration, upgrade, maintenance and security of network initiatives.

• Experience building and configuring the network infrastructure to support and secure major Internet host and enterprise level services

• Strong Network Security experience: firewall management, Access Control List (ACL), secure remote management practices, NAC, IDS, ASA, PIX, MARS, IPS, etc.) to maintain perimeter and internal security.

• Experience or exposure to networking for high-availability systems solutions and architectures.

• Advanced knowledge of Cisco, Juniper and F5 Networks product lines.

• Advanced knowledge of global and server load balancing. Specifically, the F5 Networks product line. This includes SSL accelerator technologies and load balancing algorithms.

• Advanced knowledge of high-speed data technologies including frame-relay, OC-3, T1, DS-3, and other private line connectivity.

• Experience working in high-volume, terabyte-sized Oracle OLTP environment.

• Previous experience with SONET and dark fiber optical networking (CWDM and/or DWDM) considered a very strong plus.

• Knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL skills considered a plus.

• Candidate must have extensive experience working within structured change management processes for highly available enterprise systems.

• Experience with enterprise monitoring systems is highly desired (e.g. Nagios, EMC Smarts, etc.).
