Manager, Material Standards and Testing
Greater Chicago Area, US - Civil Engineering, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
The Manager, Material Standards & Testing is responsible for materials quality management processes, including new technology implementation strategy, material analysis and approval, material quality control, defective item program, materials/tools failure analysis. Additionally, this position coordinates all requests for technical services including; specialty tool repair, gas chromatography, and well water sampling. This position acts as a main point of contact with vendors on product performance issues. The role involves leading communication to Field Operations, Gas Operations, System Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain on product performance issues and to regulatory agencies on incident investigations.
Functional Expertise:
- Sets strategy and direction for the identification and evaluation of new technologies and materials in an effort to improve system integrity and gain efficiencies in productivity. Establishes priority of new materials to be tested.
- Establishes goals for the material quality process
- Provides oversight and direction of the defective item program, incoming material inspection program, mechanical fitting failure program, plastic pipe data collection program and material failure and analysis program.
- Represents the company on issues involving materials and tooling at industry events and committees (e.g. Gas Technology Institute, ASTM, API, AGA)
- Provides oversight for tool repair vs. replace decisions
- Serves as main point-of-contact with vendors for new technologies and material quality issues.
Business Acumen:
- Identifies and recommends new technologies and materials in an effort to improve system integrity and achieve greater efficiency in the field activities being conducted. Estimates the impact of material issues on company operations.
- Prepares departmental budget and monitors variances.
Engagement:
- Responsible for coaching, developing and providing performance feedback to staff to ensure maximum productivity.
- Coordinates field trials of new products or materials.
- Collaborates with business units to determine the scope, extent, type of communication, schedule and audience in regards to the introduction of new products, changes to existing materials
- Makes recommendations to Supply Chain and business units on product alternatives and reports on product performance.
- Maintains active involvement in industry groups such as GTI and AGA on materials and tooling performance issues.
- Leads presentations to business units on new materials/technologies and provides project status updates
Driving Results:
- Prioritizes requests for technical services with business units and establishes work plans for testing and evaluating materials.
- Drives new technology releases and material changes and ensures feedback loop with users group is maintained.
- Keep product and vendor material performance metrics and provides for continuous improvement on quality issues.
Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
- BA/BS in recognized engineering discipline
Preferred:
- Professional Engineering License (PE)
Related Work Experience:
Required:
- 6+ years engineering or operations experience in a gas utility, pipeline transmission, or other energy related field
- PHMSA regulation knowledge and experience including the following codes and standards:
- 49 CFR Part 192/193/195
- ANSI B31.8/B31.8S/B31.G/Z1.4/Z1.9
- API 1163/API 5L/API 1104/API 1107
- ASTMD-2513
- International/National Fuel Gas Code
- NFP
- 5+ years of supervisory/management experience
- Project management experience
Preferred:
- Experience in materials or product testing procedures.
Specific Skills & Knowledge:

- Knowledge of material testing protocols and equipment
- Understanding of ASTM standards, API standards, ANSI standards and other standards as referenced in 49CFR192.7.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Occasional Traveler (5-20% travel): The incumbent will be required to travel on occasion. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
- The incumbent works in an office environment.
- The incumbent may/will work near or with moving mechanical parts.
- The incumbent may/will be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals.
- The incumbent may/will be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.
