About the Monitoring Team

Salesforce processes more than 2 billion customer interactions per day across our global data centers. Do you want to solve big data problems? Do you want to be part of the team building the next generation web-scale distributed data platform system for collection, processing and analyzing this data and provide near realtime insights? If so, this is the gig for you! Your solution will process tens of terabytes of logs and billions of metrics every day. It's a 24-7 system with an appropriate number of 9s.



Ideal candidates are hands-on software engineers with proven ability to design, develop and optimize innovative tools and systems at massively large scale, with deep knowledge of software engineering, service oriented architecture and distributed systems.



We're mostly a Java house, with some Python, Go, Scala around the edges. We use a mixture of home-grown, open source and commercial solutions right now. We'd like to up our open source game.



Responsibilities:

  • Design and manage both new and existing services as a hands-on developer.

  • Maintain end-to-end ownership of the services including design, development, automated testing, deployment and debugging.

  • Lead by example by contributing high quality, production ready code that powers critical instrumentation of the Salesforce infrastructure.

  • Analyze, design and develop test cases and implement automated test suites.

  • Work closely with the open-source community and contribute back changes.

  • Make sound design decisions on the basis of performance, scalability, and future expansion.

  • Resolve complex technical issues and drive innovation that improves system availability, resiliency, and performance.

  • Commitment to grown-up Software Engineering - Test Driven Development, Documentation, Code reviews, Continuous Deployment.




Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or similar engineering field, or 8+ years equivalent experience

  • 3+ years of experience developing server-side Java applications

  • Expert knowledge in a two or more of the following langauges: Java, C++, Python, Perl, Ruby, Go, Scala.

  • Strong comfort level using Unix/Linux in development and production environments.

  • Bring passion, ability & willingness to learn quickly and a mindset to make a difference to the table.

  • Highly effective communication skills and ability to work independently with not much oversight / assistance.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and opinions on Hadoop and HDFS, Map Reduce, PIG/Hive

  • Experience working on teams using agile development techniques and DevOps patterns

  • Experience with open source tools such as Apache Kafka, OpenTSDB, Logstash, ElasticSearch, StatsD, Twitter Storm, Solr

  • Knowledge of Java management technologies including JMX, MBeans, Java management features and SNMP

  • Experience building and tuning highly scalable, highly available, and highly concurrent distributed systems

  • Experience using SQL and/or NoSQL datastores, e.g. Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, HBase, Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis, CouchDB

  • Active contributor to one or more open source project.
